safe in the steep cliffs

by Rachel Lynch

Raw mountain honey. You're the heat that I know. When the sun rises over the cliffs in the cherry tree fields, I think of you.

And tonight's a strawberry moon. We were running wild. The summer fires, the hidden spells. I do nothing and leave nothing undone.

Cold summer evening, I saw you walking to the front door. Feet in the grass. Smoking in the daylight, mind in the overflow. Coconut fingertips. We're tied to the other side. We're tied to each other. Coming through the back door, and hiding from the other.

Unlocked cabin and stars in the sky. Salt and sand. The evening lets us go.

Rose moon, and the peace that comes from the quiet of nature. I take a breath and feel the color kicking in. Many years ago, maybe it was a dream.
